But the main feature of the new kitchen is the four-foot by 12-foot island that can accommodate six at the counter. It features a gas range top. Planning ahead was a design consid-
eration. Taking advantage of the space afforded by the removal of the dining room allowed a six-inch extension to the downstairs bathroom where they built a closet that can be remodeled for a tub or shower installation in the future. Upgrades to the living room included
removal of the wood-burning fireplace and replacing it with a gas unit. An alcove became part of the entertainment center with the addition of a 60-inch flat screen TV. The space was better utilized with built-in shelving to accommodate accessories. The area could easily be converted into a main floor bedroom should the need arise. Anne and Brian are still young, but this forethought will allow them to remain in their home well into their senior years. At the outset of the renovation, when
Oswald removed the wall to square off the previously indented exterior wall, they soon discovered the reason for the chronic freezing of the pipes in the en suite bathroom on the second floor. The pipes were against the outside wall, which conducted the cold without
any barriers. Once this was remedied, Oswald replaced the corner two-seater jet bath tub with a tiled walk-in shower that features a bench. The vanity area was extended to utilize the former shower stall space. The space is now both functional and efficient. This isn’t the first time Oswald has

been called to perform this sort of renovation. “We are doing a lot of ‘bomb outs’ and extensions of ten-by- two–feet,” says business owner, Ralph Oswald. “Adding on two to three feet to a home makes a big difference.” As for the Reids, they are more than
pleased with the project, although there are some unexpected side effects. “Due to this reno we have to do all
the family dinners because now we have the big kitchen!” says Anne with pride. “As for the cooking, we all do it and, depending on what we are having, it usually becomes a group effort.” V
Cabinets are custom built by Jake
Klassen’s Kitchen Gallery. Flooring is called Celenio by “HARO”. This is a type of pressed hardwood from Germany that is new to Canada. A cork underlay supports the tile and there are no nails required for installation.
