The fully-functional kitchen offers a lot of natural light and a spacious work area. Traditional white cabinets mix beautifully with the darker ones featured in the island and bar area.

SMALL EXTENSION MAKES HUGE DIFFERENCE

ometimes just a little bit of added space makes all the difference in the world. Anne and Brian Reid of

Winnipeg built a new home in Charles- wood during the mid-1980’s and after some 25 years it was time for a change. Having a large family and entertain- ing regularly, they found their once trendy kitchen and dining room area had become dark, dysfunctional and no longer served their needs. “Our house was adequate but we

wanted to make the kitchen bigger,” says Anne of the goal. “So we decided to eliminate the dining room and expand the outside wall of the house to better

utilize the space.” Before the renovations, the kitchen

had a small window above the sink. The dining area had a bay window with two smaller accent windows for light. The Reids’ daughter, Christine, is an interior designer and together the three came up with the plan. The goal was to build an addition that extended the kitchen and dining room area by about 70 square feet. The project would square off the indented exterior wall to extend the roofline of the home. Enter Oswald Construction, a small

local company with a growing reputa- tion for excellent work and attention to

detail. They got to work right away. On the main floor, Oswald elimi-

nated the dining room, removed the bay window and replaced it with patio doors and five large new windows. This seemingly small extension provided the desired space to accommodate the larger feel and brightened up the area with plenty of natural light. The tradi- tional antique white cabinets contrast perfectly with the quartz counters and darker oak cabinet choices of the island and bar, an on-trend colour and design that is just emerging. The mosaic tiling of the backsplash, with its varied but neutral colours, is easy to accessorize.
