Santa Rosa, CA. ~ For over two months during the Fall of 2012, photographers and artists, both profession- als and amateurs, students and seniors, were invited to come to the Sonoma County Museum, an historic 1910 structure that was originally a post office, for the unique opportunity to have access to its galleries as well as parts of the museum not generally open to the public: i.e. the attic, the basement, staff offic- es, etc. They brought not only professional cameras, but also iPhones, iPads, mobile devic- es, GoPros, models, and props to realize this project. They laid on the floor, ducked under dusty attic eaves, rode the ele- vator, discovered the vaults, explored the garden, worked alone and with friends, and in the process of discovering all the nooks and crannies they discovered something about themselves as well. In the words of Bob Johnson, one of the participating artists: "The concept of InMyBackYard is a way to find and explore what

is alive in a finite space. In my experience within the finite boundaries of The Museum I reached a plateau where the space turned on me — it became infinite. The half-life of every minute expanded into eternity. It was as though I was suddenly in the IN MY BACK YARD UNIVERSE." By opening itself up to

the community, the museum hoped that many stories would evolve from the images creat- ed: that perceptions about the purpose of a museum would be explored, that the archi- tecture of the historic build- ing would inspire, and that the confines of the assign- ment would encourage a more expanded

Nearly one hundred art- ists participated in the photo shoots, and the diversity of their extraordinary work ful- filled all of these hopes. The exhibition is a testimony to the abundance and quality of creativity in our commu- nity. It is not to be missed!
