BHS closes its

Aylesford store THE BHS home furnishings store at Quarry Wood, Ayles- ford, was the secondmajor firm to close within three weeks at the retail park. BHS shut up shop on January

12, as one of 250 branches throughout the country which were earmarked for closure by parent company Arcadia Group after a 40% fall in profits. An estimated 60 staff at Aylesford were affected. A spokesman said it was working hard to re- deploy workers to other stores within BHS or Arcadia. The closure came threeweeks

after the shutdown of electrical retailer Comet’s nearby unit due to the collapse of the na- tional chain. The lease of the now former BHS store was sold in 2011 to Irish-based Smyths Toys and planning permission was since granted to install mezzanine floors and sub-di- vide the premises into three units. The idea was that BHS would remain in downsized premises. Smyths says that each of its stores provides 30 jobs with around 60 extra staff at Christmas. An opening date has not been announded. Labour parliamentary candi-

date for Chatham and Ayles- ford, Tristan Osborne said: “It is a sad day for residents who have family or friends that worked in store.”

Homes group to move house

TONBRIDGE and Malling’s largest social housing provider is moving house. Russet Homes is taking on

new premises in Tower View, King’s Hill, replacing its three regional offices in Sevenoaks, Aylesford and Tonbridge. Russet believes the new HQ

will better serve its 16,000 customers, with full disabled facilities, computer access and refreshment areas. Denise Reeves, managing di-

rector, said “Russet’s commit- ment to its residents is what inspired this exciting move. We will be consulting with them every step of the way to make sure our new home can fit their needs.” A spokesman said the move would allow Russet to pass on a series of cost-saving benefits to its customers as the organi- sation streamlines and coordi- nates its operations.

Growing reputation A LARKFIELD childminder who helped children grow vegetables and provided exciting toys has re- ceived a good Ofsted report. Sara Boughton has looked after children at her home in Barrie Drive since last year. Ofsted in- spectors were impressed with the healthy, home-cooked food, snacks and treats provided and the fact children learnt to grow vegetables. To achieve an outstanding grade,

she should practise an evacuation procedure in case of an emergency and improve monitoring.
