Ever since I had a Saturday job, selling records in Woolworths in the early 1970s I have had a fascination with pop music. I remember the first single I sold was Don McLean’s “American Pie”. It reached No. 2 in the Charts in January 1972 but was beaten to the No. 1 slot by a combination of T Rex’s “Telegram Sam”, Chicory Tip’s “Son of my Father”, the New Seeker’s “I’d like to teach the World to Sing” and Neilson’s “Without You”. Sad fellow that I am, I still look at the Charts every week and try to keep in touch with the latest bands. I currently have around 5000 songs on my iPad so it is very difficult to select 20, but I’ve had a go:
