O
ne of the many highlights of this hockey season has been a very successful tour to Holland in October half term. Thirty girls from Years 9 - 13 enjoyed competing
against the Dutch, learnt a lot about the tactical side of the game and had a lot of fun along the way. The U14 team won the Masterclass Hockey Tournament in Maastricht on the last day.
The U18 Hockey team represented Sussex at the Regional Hockey Tournament in November and competed well against strong opposition. This season sees the end of an era for the team who also went to the Regional Final as U16 Sussex champions two years ago. Captains Bethan Longley and Lily Loveland have done a fantastic job organising the team and supporting the Schools’ new Hockey Coach, Mrs Fletcher.
The Lower School girls have enjoyed a new Wednesday sports afternoon and this has seen a huge improvement in the number of fixtures and the quality of play within Years 7 and 8. The player of the season is Chelsea Henshaw, who has also recently been selected to attend Sussex U13 JAC. Attendance at clubs has also been boosted in Years 7 – 9 and we hope this continues into the netball season in January.
M
ayfield’s swimmers are
enjoying an excellent season. Established members of the Swim Squad have been joined by
several talented new pupils, including Ashley Stone, Katie White, Emma Jenkins and Rebecca and Naomi Snow, to give real strength in depth to the Mayfield team. The result has been a number of notable victories over Benenden, Combe Bank School, TWGGS and Brighton & Hove High School.
Congratulations to Year 11 student Fran Collings, who played her first water polo match for Great Britain in December and is working extremely hard to reach the European Championships next September.

NetballNews Sport Scholar News
As the sporting year is now well underway, we’re pleased to offer an update on two of our Sports Scholars:
•Sarah Mercer (Year 7) joined Mayfield as a Scholar in September and is already making her mark, having represented the School at hockey and been selected to attend the Tennis Academy Programme. Sarah is a talented cricketer who, with her club side, won the county cricket tournament last summer, a performance which has led to her being selected for the Regional Academy and being put forward for an U13 county trial. At the Tunbridge Wells Cricket Club awards evening, Sarah was presented with the Coaches’ Award for Best All-Rounder at TWCC U11.
•Millie Bresnahan (Year 10) was selected to represent the Southern Region in the Junior National Tetrathlon Championships (UK & Eire), where she came 25th out of 150 competitors, an excellent performance in a national competition.
Our congratulations go to both girls. HOCKEY CAPTAINS

German and History trip to Munich
T
he Second World War and Germany’s Nazi past were a
key part of a half term trip to Munich for German and History students in Years 10-13. The trip included visits to Neuschwanstein, Salzburg and Albrecht Dürer’s house in Nuremberg.
Amongst the many highlights were the trick fountains of Hellbrunn and the visit to Dachau concentration camp, the largest camp in Germany and one of the first to be built. A vast amount of work has been put into preserving it and building a museum which uncompromisingly charts its development and provides detailed information about every aspect of the life, and death, of its inmates. Both here and in Nuremberg both the girls and staff were struck by the wealth of detailed information about the period of the Third Reich and the Second World War.
Nothing was concealed or excused.
