140th Founder’s Day celebrated with cream tea and cards

C

ornelia Connelly Day was celebrated in style on Monday 15 October to mark the 140th anniversary of the School’s foundation. After a morning

of lessons, the whole School came together in Chapel for the celebration of Mass, followed by lunch, where the girls met with members of different year groups and staff in their competitive houses.

Students then spent the afternoon learning how to play whist. Making good use of mathematical and communication skills, they also developed an understanding of tactical play and team work. Great fun was had by all – from our youngest Year 7 girls through to the Sixth Form. In every room there was an air of excitement and some fierce competition!

As Miss Beary said in her address to launch the afternoon: “ Playing cards might appear to be a rather random way to spend a few hours. However, there is a reason. Cornelia Connelly wanted

her girls to have the same quality of education as boys; she wanted them to make a difference in the world. That meant ensuring that they studied academic subjects like Maths, but (unlike the Victorian boys’ schools) also that they had fun and were able to be creative. She saw cards as a creative way to have fun and learn; using maths skills, logic, teamwork and competition. At St Leonards the girls went swimming in the sea – which was frowned upon. In fact the Bishop wrote to complain about Cornelia’s girls and staff playing cards and swimming, which she ignored. So, this afternoon you are being rebellious! Use this time to meet and talk to people you may not know so well; find out more about them. Be creative, have fun and you should learn about yourself and others.

” Mayfield girls explore Morocco

The Hub: open for business!

T Y

ear 11 Geographers spent half term in Morocco, collecting river data for the GCSE Controlled Assessment and taking in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Marrakech. The girls also managed to fit in a camel ride and a tour of the ancient city by

calèche. They enjoyed haggling for bargains in the Medina souks and proved themselves to be more than a match for the seasoned traders!

Year 13 Day of Recollection I

he doors to the Hub opened officially for business at 8am on

Thursday 8 November. A newly refurbished space at the heart of the School, the Hub provides an informal meeting point, a relaxed teaching space, a venue for talks and workshops and much more. It provides somewhere for pupils and staff to relax with a latte or a refreshing cold drink, when they are not supposed to be in lessons, of course!

n October Year 13 took part in their last Day of Recollection at Mayfield. The scriptural focus of the

day was ‘do not say I am too young’ Jeremiah 1:4-10. The girls spent the day focusing on the transition they are about to make from life at Mayfield to life at University, on their gap year, or wherever God may take them. For some it was an emotional day, but it helped them re-focus on living every moment as it comes, enjoying and making the most of the opportunities they have and allowing God to lead them into a new and exciting life full of opportunities.

For many, the highlight of the Hub is the brand new café. Furnished in a contemporary style with comfortable leather sofas, girls and staff alike have been enjoying the café’s fine selection of Italian coffees, speciality teas and most of all, really great hot chocolate! The warm cookies are also not to be missed.

The Hub Café is open from 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays, and 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays.
