Maryland Entries Succeed at Devon
by Beth Collier Nearly every possible sporthorse breed show
class is off ered at the annual Dressage at De- von Breed Show, held this year on September 25-27 in Devon, Pennsylvania. Except for indi- vidual breed classes, all classes are open to any type of horse, color or size. T e classes consist of three types: Young Horse classes for horses up to three years of age shown in-hand; Mature Horse/Breeding Horse classes for horses four years and older, also shown in- hand; and Materiale and Under Saddle Classes for horses three years and old- er judged on suitability to become a dressage horse. Scores for Young Horse
classes are based on 60% movement, 30% confor- mation and 10% general impression. Mature Horse classes are based on 50% movement, 40% confor- mation and 10% general impression. Materiale and Under Saddle classes are judged with all horses in the ring at the same time shown at the walk, trot and canter, similar to a hack class at a horse show. In the in-hand classes, horses are presented one at a time “on the triangle.” A handler shows off each horse at the walk and trot. Foals are usually shown with their mothers. T e judges for the Breed Show this year were
Jayne Ayers, Carter Bass, Janet Foy, Sue Man- das, Lisa Gorretta and Janine Malone.
In Memory of Great Maryland Breeders
New for 2012 was the inaugural T ree-Year-
Old Prospect Championship. Scores for the championship were combined from the in-hand colts/geldings and fi llies classes and the Mate- riale (under saddle) classes. Family and friends of the late Angela Barilar presented the winner with the new Angela Barilar Memorial Trophy. High Point Hanoverians (Chestertown) is the lasting legacy of Angela, who began importing stallions, mares and young stock from Ger- many in the 1980s. Qhiver (Quaterback X EM Wyneth L), a three-year-old Oldenburg mare, bred and owned by Mo Swanson of Pennsylva- nia, was this year’s winner. David Bowie MF (Don Principe X EM Ro-
tina), bred and owned by Maryanna Haymon of North Carolina, won the Sally Martin Me- morial Perpetual Trophy for the overall Foal Championship. Hassler Dressage at Riveredge
