The Maryland Horse Council will pay tribute to the longest serving, hardest working and most proli c equine journalist in Maryland’s horse history. After starting his career at The Baltimore Sun in 1943, where he covered racing with Jim McManus (whom the world came to know as Jim McKay at ABC Sports), in 1955 Mr. Kelly went to work for The Washington Star, where he served as racing editor un- til the paper folded in 1981. He continued to serve the in- dustry, rst as the media director at Laurel Park, then as the publicity director for the Maryland Million. In 1994, he wrote the de nitive history “At the Track:
Thoroughbred Racing
in Maryland, 1870 – 1973” for a special edition of the Maryland Historical Magazine devoted to Maryland’s turf sports. He continued, until his death, to practice his craft, contributing to the annual Pimlico Preakness Guide and serving as the historical consultant for Pimlico and the Maryland Jockey Club. The
Maryland Horseman of the
Year is presented in honor and recognition of Mr. Kelly’s long and outstanding career in the Maryland horse industry.
