Innovation in Publishing
lekiosk’s virtual newstand allows you to purchase and sample magazines
“We are also creating a cross platform strategy, where customers have one single account but can access all of their magazines from any device.
“Perhaps most importantly is that we want to build a social environment around these magazines. We want to look at how we can build interaction between the user, the app and between titles and try to use this marketplace to duplicate what already exists in this industry and put it online.
“The problem at the moment is everyone thinks increasing interactivity in digital magazines is about adding video or other forms of media, but we have been very clear from the beginning that we want to keep the print edition the same online. We think it’s the best experience because it’s simple and I don’t think people want to watch videos while they are reading. The print format is the best format for magazines in my opinion. I think that reading will be huge thanks to the tablet and the reason we built the platform is because we want to go further, and too many people think the way to justify switching from print to digital is to keep adding more. We don’t need to do that and sometimes less is more.
“An epiphany for me was thinking about why I invest so much of my time in reading. The answer is because I want

to share what I read, I want to talk about what I read to others and that is the reason I do it. It’s not about building a better user experience than print - it’s about how we can go further with digital, how can we create something that already exists in real life and put it online to let users go further and build a more addictive service.
“This is a recurring problem in the app industry. You have so many apps but people are only using 5 to 10 apps regularly. If you want people to keep using your app, you need to build this interactivity.”
Before concluding our interview, I ask Michael if he could divulge a few words of wisdom to our entrepreneurial audience, particularly tech start-ups who were looking at creating a game changing product. “Learn how to say no” says Michael. “When you are building a start-up you have so many ideas, you share them with people, they add their own ideas and you want to do everything!
“Sometimes you need to focus on the main value of your product and keep it simple.”
