pictures of reality, became one of the most influential, if contentious, ideas in the philosophy of language. At the heart of his philosophy lies a vision of a system of inexpressible logical relationships beyond language’s reach, an idea which still underpins much of the work in this field today.

Second UK printing. This copy of Döblin’s great Weimar novel was obviously given by Carmel to David and signed by the author at a later date.

These three books together provide the context of David Guest’s intellectual background with their mixture of Russian culture, left-wing politics, Anglo- German interest and close assocation with leading cultural figures. He was clearly encouraged in his literary and political interests by his family, who were amongst the leading Jewish left-wing figures of their day and had influence within diverse intellectual circles. It is no wonder that David at Cambridge was both politically zealous and unintimidated by his stern and unforgiving tutor. With his connections at the highest level of British politics, it is also no mystery that he was considered such a prize by the Russians; he would indeed have been very well placed to be a spy.
