Fair Hill’s Fall Festival: CCI*** Competition continued... CCI*** Competitors

Severe thunderstorms rolled in early Friday morning delaying the start of dressage by an hour and dumping a lot of water on Fair Hill. “It was smart of the organizers to just hold off on the start of dressage because of the storms. Fair Hill is a great competition. Outside of Rolex, it is the biggest three-day in this area,” Daniel Clasing of Yardley Hill Farm stated. He rode his dressage test with Houston in the CCI*** on Friday and stood in 22nd place going into cross-country. “Fair Hill did a great job with the aeration of the course. It drained very well after Friday’s rains,” Daniel pointed out. He and Houston were one of only three double clean rounds of the day in the CCI***. T eir fast and clean round moved them up into sixth place. “Houston has a big gallop and the Fair Hill course really suits him,” Daniel said. T is was Daniel and Houston’s third trip around a Fair Hill three-day course. T ey competed in the CCI** in 2010 and the CCI*** in 2011. “T e questions this year were pretty spread out throughout the course. T e road crossing was tougher this year and the so were the corners off the drop in the farmyard,” he added. Overall, Daniel said the course rode well and the only problem they had as a pair was at the turning brush at the end of the course. “Houston just didn’t turn well and we stood off the brush a bit. But it was very forgiving and we jumped clean,” he explained. On Sunday, Daniel had one rail and a few time faults to fi nish in eighth place. T is summer, Daniel switched Houston into a hackamore for show jumping and is pleased with the results. “He is a sensitive-mouthed horse and is much happier in the hackamore. In the past, he has not been too consistent with his show jumping but this year was a big improvement with just one rail down,” he said.

Marilyn Little was the fi rst down the centerline for dressage in the

CCI*** riding RF Demeter. T is mare had recently returned to the Ad- vanced level after a small injury sidelined her earlier in the year. T ey scored a 52.6 and ended the day in 10th place. With her second ride in the CCI***, RF Smoke on the Water, Marilyn earned a 44.8 to place second. “I’m just thrilled with him. Every test this year has been better and better,” she said. Marilyn and RF Demeter were also the fi rst to head out onto the

CCI*** course in the afternoon on Saturday. T e pair jumped around clean with just a few time faults and moved into fourth place. With her second CCI*** horse, Marilyn also jumped clean but just outside the time. She and RF Smoke on the Water moved up into second place. At Sunday’s fi nal horse inspection, RF Demeter passed with fl ying col-

ors; however RF Smoke on the Water was held for a second look by the ground jury. He was passed on reinspection. Marilyn and RF Smoke on the Water dropped one rail but stayed in second place. With RF Demeter, Marilyn placed fourth after jumping double clean.

Julia Wendell of An Otherwise Perfect Farm also represented Maryland in the CCI***. She rode Cavendish to 34th place after a very tough dres- sage test on Friday morning. Julia called it a day after having a stop at the fi rst water on the cross-country course.
