New Market- Middletown Valley Hounds Inaugural Sporting Clays Shoot This fundraising event was sponsored by the New Market-Middletown Valley Hounds, with a portion

of the proceeds benefi tting the Maryland Association for Wildlife Conservation (MAWC), and was held Sunday, September 30, at Actor’ s Hill Shooting Syndicate in Keedysville. Richard Smith of Royal United Gamebirds, himself a foxhunter and former professional gamekeeper from Gloucester, UK, set the course. Fifty-six shooters, who endured heavy rains, wind, and hail, none of which was forecasted for the day, shot a clever course of 100 sporting clays at eight diff erent stations. The event was open to all, and included teams and individuals from the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club, the Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds, the New Market-Middletown Valley Hounds and the Marlborough Hunt Club. Teams of four shooters from rec- ognized or MAWC member packs of hounds competed for a perpetual trophy, the Foxhunters Challenge, which was won by the team from the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club: Burley Cocks, Andrea Seefelt Knight, Charlie Mace (who had the high score of the day, hitting 96 out of 100 clays) and Govane McClees. Receiv- ing the award for high individual (non-team) shooter was Fred Sasscer, representing the Marlborough Hunt Club. The day fi nished with an awards ceremony and cocktail reception enjoyed by the participants, as well as a large group of spectators and volunteers. A total of $500 was raised for MAWC and NMMVH looks to make this an annual event.
