Welcome 19
7 ISSUE SIXTY NINE: DECEMBER 2012 / JANUARY 2013
WELCOME A
ccording to the Sodexo University Lifestyle Survey 2012, half of all students spend seven hours a
week or more on social networking sites, while 15% spend even more than 20 hours a week on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr – up from 6% in 2008. They are platforms that are increasingly integrating themselves into every aspect of our lives, and the graduate recruitment industry is – understandably – at the sharp end of this cultural shift. For some time there has been a realisation that the sector needs to embrace and understand this changing behaviour, but it is relatively recently that companies and institutions have started to learn how best to leverage these channels and what really works. Hence, the team at Graduate Recruiter decided it would be timely to make this issue a Social Media Special, sharing advice, insights and experiences from a range of people in the space. To this end,
Graduatejobs.com’s Ross Whistler takes some time to explore how employers can engage their target audience more effectively using social media (pg 13), while Russell Reader reveals how Lancaster University is embracing this trend, describing Twitter as the institution’s virtual ‘front door’ (pg 16). Ernst and Young’s Myrto Kalle talks about the company’s ground- breaking ‘prize-tagging’ Facebook campaign (pg 19) – which has arguably set a benchmark in social media recruitment – while digital social and mobile strategist, Matt Alder, founder of MetaShift, looks at how to better understand Facebook, as well as the importance of embracing mobile going forward. The AGR Pages also
include Ten Top Tips for a successful social media campaign… can you afford not to have a peek? Fittingly, we have also introduced a new column,
Trending Topics, in response to the growing number of debates taking place in and around AGR’s Twitterfeed and LinkedIn group. The launch of the new Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) alone has prompted some choice tweets…whatever will we see in the next issue? AGR’s Chief Executive, Carl Gilleard has also put pen to paper for this issue, reflecting on how many of AGR’s Manifesto proposals have been implemented as we reach the halfway point of the current Parliament. He concludes that AGR’s thinking was prescient, to say the least.
Of course, it is also that time of year again and we can’t let this issue slip by without a little Christmas cheer… well, at least, without airing some of our members’ New Year’s Resolutions. To (very) broadly summarise, they include more romance, more fitness, more tweeting, less chocolate and less junk email. Hmm. Make it more romance and more chocolate and it might just make it on to the next AGR Manifesto…
Have yourselves a very Happy Christmas, stay safe and see you in the New Year!
