Representatives from large businesses, sports people, Newham Council, entertainers, clothes designers and College leaders were among the 400-plus people who applauded winners and nominees at the Troxy in Limehouse. Awards given out included efforts in gaining employability, promoting equality, and special awards from businesses as well as excellent work in particular study areas. Banuja Selvarajah, 21, from East Ham, was presented with the Alexander McQueen Award by the designer’s sister Janet and nephew Gary Hulyer. The world-renown designer was an alumni of Newham College. Tutors on Banuja’s Fashion Foundation Diploma course regarded her as highly creative and she is now studying at the London College of Fashion.

College principal Denise Brown-Sackey said: “The Awards Evening is one of the highlights of the college year. Every year the range of awards develops and increases and I am very grateful to all our partners, employers and sponsors for contributing so much to both this evening’s celebrations and, of course, to the college and its students throughout the year.”
