NEWS All-you-can-eat debate rumbles on

VERIZON will continue to offer unlimited data on its fixed-line FIOS network as long as major investment is not required to keep up with demand, the US carrier’s CTO Tony Werner told an audience at the Broadband World Forum yesterday. While unlimited data plans are going the way of the dodo in most wireless markets, it is not yet of con- cern to Verizon for its fibre network. “The unlimited pricing scheme is not

something that we want to run from simply because we think metered is in our best interest. We think that for the foresee- able future the technology will allow us [to remain unmetered]. It depends on our in-

vestment requirements and if it is required that we will have to cover it.” Yukio Ito, senior vice president, service

infrastructure for Japan’s NTT Commu- nications, said that the problem facing the operator is that many younger Japanese people don’t want to own a fixed line as fast LTE gives them more flexibility, but that this puts huge pressure on its wireless network. The emphasis for NTT now is to reduce operating costs to enable it to continue to make profits despite ongoing downward pressure on consumer pricing. Addressing the challenge of upload speeds needing to increase to enable the

use of cloud services, Christian Eychene, VP, IT infrastructure Technologies & engi- neering, Orange-France Telecom, said that the answer lay in FTTH replacing ADSL, which was not suitable of service requiring high upload bandwidth. In response to a question asking when

operators would make good on the promise made many years ago that voice would eventually be free due to its low bandwidth requirements, Verizon’s Tony Werner sug- gested that for those consumers purchasing one of its Share Everything bundles, voice and messaging is already effectively free. “You can say it’s free or you can say it’s part

of the bundle, —nothing in life is free”. Finally, addressing the impact of how

much data will realistically move to the cloud, CTO of Cisco’s Service Provider division, David Ward said: “The utilisation of the cloud is still in its infancy. There’s so much more potential of what can be done. The capability to add additional services is almost limitless for enterprises.” But he also hinted at net neutrality issues hampering progress in that regard. “There are regula- tory issues—we don’t have a level playing field across all broadband technologies to enable operators to reduce cost by creating application differentiation.”
