While a signifi cant development in its own right, it is important to remember the ultimate aim of this process is to gain bipartisan commitment for a referendum to amend the Constitution to acknowledge Australia’s fi rst peoples and remove racially discriminatory provisions from our foundation document.
This is a signifi cant issue for all Australians and it is essential that work continues to ensure a successful referendum on constitutional recognition. The Law Council has urged the Government and Opposition to re-affi rm their commitment to Constitutional recognition and commit to a comprehensive community education campaign over the next two years.
I would like to congratulate former Commonwealth Solicitor General, Mr Stephen Gageler SC, on his appointment as a Justice of the High Court of Australia.
As a highly respected member of the Australian legal profession, I am confi dent Mr Gageler will provide outstanding service to the High Court of Australia.
Mr Gageler has replaced the Hon Justice William Gummow AC. I would also like to thank him, on behalf of the Law Council, for his outstanding service to the High Court of which he has been a member since 1995.
Catherine Gale President 2012
