Figure 4 below shows the workplace location of Australian solicitors. Overall, the largest proportion of solicitors was practising within the capital city of their jurisdiction (57.2 per cent). Over one quarter (26.7 per cent) were practising in a suburban location, followed by 12.8 per cent working in a country or rural area. City-based solicitors were more prevalent in the Northern Territory (96.2 per cent) and South Australia (76.1 per cent) while Queensland and Tasmania had the highest proportions of solicitors working in country or rural areas (31.0 per cent and 30.1 per cent respectively).


Young lawyers were slightly more concentrated in city-based employment than the profession as a whole (62.7 per cent of young lawyers compared to 57.2 per cent overall). Female practitioners were also most concentrated in city-


based workplaces (47.0 per cent) whilst male practitioners were more prevalent in country or rural areas (59.8 per cent). Interestingly, this trend was reversed for young female lawyers, who outnumbered their male counterparts in country and rural areas (62.5 per cent female, 37.5 per cent male).
