BY STEVE MILNER As was the case with many persons,

Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Public Affairs Officer, I had the privilege of serving on Mayor Holley’s Military Affairs Committee—the group that coordinates activities designed to keep the city’s military and non-military folks on the same page in community activities and other matters. Whether it’s coordinating and executing Portsmouth’s noted Memorial Day parades, or addressing

day-to-day concerns of both groups, this committee has performed its tasks admirably over the years.
And having Mayor Holley’s
name attached to this committee--plus his ongoing support for it--gave it the muscle it needed. It also helped to have Portsmouth’s City Clerk, Debra White, working behind the scenes with civilians and military personnel.
Mayor Holley believed in
his Military Affairs Committee, just as he believed in his city’s historical and contemporary achievements. His well-known accomplishments in the civil rights area are legendary. He truly was a pioneer, cut from the same cloth REMEMBERING MAYOR HOLLEY PAGE 14
