TheScarecrow Newport Riverfront

ITWASgreattosee afull turnout forthe AJTC the- atre company’s presentation of The Scarecrow at the Riverfront studio on Saturdayafternoon. Afamilypresentation written by Mike Kenny, the playfollows the adventures of alonelyscarecrow in a furrowed field who befriends afamilyofsquab- bling, nibbling, bickering and noisycrows.

The playdelivered via live music, comic verse, and movement proved to be quite interactive with the audience and certainlycap- tured the imagination and laughter of the children. The setting of afreshlyfur-

rowed field withawealth of unusual objects immediate- ly commanded involvement as children were invited to playI-Spyand guess what some of the objects on stage could be. Iain Armstrong and Mick Jasper took on the roles of

the The Scarecrow, farmers and the crows themselves taking the audience through the seasons and recreating the onslaught of crows cre- ating havocwith puppetry, blacksheets of material and flapping blackumbrellas. Providing atmospheric

background music on her violin wasSharon Lindo who created avariety of sounds to imitate raindrops, magic, wind and occasional- ly jolting older audience members with the classic sound of acar horn.

Falling somewhere between the creativity of The Goons (in fact Mickdid look alot like Spike Milligan!) and the presenta- tion of Fingerbobs (remem- ber that?) The Scarecrow wasareal must-see forthe family. The Scarecrow will return

to the area once again on October 31 where it will play at AbergavennyBorough Theatre.Call 01873 850805 forfurther information. Andy Howells
