PORT OF SUNDERLAND FEATURE

“Complacency, resting on our laurels and waiting for business to fall into our lap, isn’t an option. We’re very clear about what our assets are at Port of Sunderland, and what makes us special and distinct from our competitors and we are absolutely committed to leveraging these strengths to ensure that we tap into what we know could be a significant opportunity for us at Port of Sunderland and for the wider regional supply chain in both the offshore renewable energy and subsea engineering sectors.”

EFFICIENT AND RESPONSIVE APPROACH TO CLIENT REQUESTS The set-up of the port means that, from a more practical point of view, it is in a very strong position to grow its income from offshore renewable energy and also the subsea engineering sector. As a growing port, and one that can offer an efficient and responsive approach to client requests, it offers flexibility that is proving to be too attractive to ignore for customers looking for a range of support services.

“But it is not just a case of being in the right place” says Matthew Hunt, Port Director at Port of Sunderland.

OFFSHORE WIND BENEFITS ALREADY ESTABLISHED Port of Sunderland is already starting to see the commercial benefits of offshore wind energy. It is currently providing a base for some of the many companies involved in both pre-development survey and assembly and installation operations in Round Two and Three developments, capitalising on its assets and advantages - from its location, facilities, and strong technical skills-base, to its well-connected infrastructure. It has an eye on future growth opportunities in both manufacturing and operations and maintenance.

EXTENSIVE PORT SERVICES Among the port’s current areas of business are bulk, project and unitised cargo handling, ship repair and marine engineering, North Sea oil and gas and offshore renewable energy and subsea engineering industry support. And with immediate access to the open sea and three kilometres of river and dock berths, Sunderland has a number of advantages that are helping its cause in attracting a growing client base in these sectors.
