SKILLS GAP FEATURE - 6TH FORM SCHOOLS TO FE COLLEGES

GREEN LIGHT FOR NORFOLK UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Young people in Norfolk will have the opportunity to attend a new school specialising in skills for energy, engineering and advanced manufacturing, backed by employers, after the government gave its backing to the Norfolk University Technical College (UTC) plan.

COMBINING PRACTICAL AND ACADEMIC STUDY The Norfolk UTC, expected to open its doors in September 2014, will offer a new type of learning for up to 600 students aged 14 to 19, combining practical and academic study and specialising in technical studies.

Students attending the Norfolk UTC will develop their skills in industry-standard facilities, taught by teachers with practical experience of the sector, whilst continuing to study GCSEs and A levels alongside their technical training. They will spend around 60 per cent of their time on core academic subjects, and the rest of their time learning specific technical skills and qualifications.

STUDENT PROGRESS The UTC will provide young people with the skills needed to progress into employment and higher level training in energy, advanced manufacturing and engineering – all strategically important and growing sectors for the region. These areas of specialism are supported by close links with leading employers and the expertise of the university sponsor.

CITY COLLEGE NORWICH City College Norwich led the bid for the Norfolk University Technical College, supported by the University of East Anglia and with the backing of leading employers in the energy, advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors.

INDUSTRY SUPPORT The Norfolk UTC plan is supported by Adnams plc, Aquaterra Energy, East of England Energy Group (EEEGR), Future Marine Services Ltd, Gardline Group, Hethel Engineering Centre, Lotus Cars Ltd, The Mason Trust, May Gurney, Mott MacDonald, National Skills Academy for Manufacturing, New Engineering Foundation (NEF), Norfolk County Council, OPITO, RWE nPower, SEMTA, Skills for Energy and Warren Services.

Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich, said: “The energy, advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors are vitally important to the long term development of the local and regional economy. Having the Norfolk UTC approved means that we can start work now to ensure we have the world class skills and training in place to support the future growth of these sectors.”

Schools Minister Lord Hill said: “I am very pleased to be announcing another wave of strong UTC proposals. Right around the country there is a lot of enthusiasm from employers, universities, pupils and parents for high quality rigorous technical education. They provide more choice for children as well as helping provide the kind of highly skilled technicians our economy needs. The response from employers to UTCs speaks for itself.”

A number of possible sites in the Norwich area are currently under consideration and an announcement about the location of the Norfolk UTC is expected in the coming months.
