FROM THEEDITOR

THIS issue of Grapevine is dedicated to showcasing the amazing contribution so many women, and men, make to policing. We make no apologies for devoting six pages to the stories of the BAWP annual award winners; it is important that the efforts of these staff are recognised and shared. It is also right that some of the experiences of policing the London 2012 Olympics are reported; I loved reading each and every article and wished we could include them all! We also continue the Olympic theme in this issue’s

personal development feature – thanks Diane for encouraging us all to think about what our legacy will be. On a more serious note it is clear the police service, and the public sector in general, is currently a challenging place to work. Surveys cite low morale (page 3), difficulties getting on the property ladder (page 6) and falling officer numbers. However there are still many women in forces across the country who are devoting time and energy to help others. From taking part in mentoring schemes (page 5) to using social media to keep in touch (page 4) to helping those less fortunate in developing countries (pages 4 and 5).

STOP PRESS: As Grapevine went to press we heard the tragic news of the deaths of two Greater Manchester Police female officers. Our thoughts go out to their families, friends and colleagues. This is a stark reminder of the risks both officers and operational police staff face on a daily basis in order to keep the public safe.
