Liskeard Show 2012 - a great family day out
Cattle and sheep take centre stage
T
HE cattle and sheep classes are always one of the highlights of the show
which is looking forward to welcoming new and returning exhibitors from across Devon and Cornwall in 2012 to a new location on the showground.
Sheep exhibitors face the toughest competition of any of the one day shows in Cornwall at Liskeard and this year is no exception with fantastic entries once again in the section. You will see more breeds of sheep than you thought possible!
New for 2012, the sheep section will be introducing classes for Ryeland sheep.
The Ryeland Sheep is one of the oldest breeds of sheep in the UK. They became known as Ryelands because they were developed in the rye growing areas or rye lands and were used to graze over the newly emerging rye to thicken it up and increase the yield. Today they are popular amongst smallholders.
Sheep classes start at 9.30 with the Junior Shepherds and aim to finish at approximately 2.30 when the Champion Sheep of the Show will be picked by Interbreed Judge Mrs S Harmer from Lewes in East Sussex. Come along and see the champions of the sheep section.
The cattle section remains strong and also starts its classes with the Junior Stockpersons at 9.30 followed by the individual breed classes at 10.00.
The junior classes are always a highlight of the show if you are arriving early come and give the young people and their calves and the future of farming your support.
In 2012 we welcome back an entry of Hereford Cattle in the any other native breed classes, look out for their distinctive white faces and red coats.
The cattle section is delighted that Nicky Harwood, the ‘Cow Lady’, has once again offered to paint for the winning owner of the Supreme Champion an original portrait of the winning animal.
Nicky, who paints from her studio in Dobwalls, is a great supporter of the show which relies on generous sponsorship and donations from local businesses for cups and prize money. The portrait is a truly unique prize and is eagerly sought after.
The man who will be picking the supreme champion animal is Mr Roy Kinnish from Bridgenorth in Shropshire. He will choose between the interbreed Beef Champion and the interbreed Dairy Champion at approximately 12.30.
If you do not get a chance to see the cattle judging in the morning come along to the cattle lines at 3.30 in the afternoon for the parade of prizewinning cattle and presentation of the cups.
See a selection of the many different breeds – large and small, beef, dairy and dual purpose - parade in the show rings and join us in congratulating the winning exhibitors on all the hard work and commitment that goes into breeding and preparing prize winners.
