Karate club members in medal success
FIVE members of the Maid- stone-based Kimura Shukokai Karate Club fought their way to top place at this year’s KSI World Karate Championships held in Atlantic City, USA. The five travelled over to At-
lantic City with the rest of the SKF England Karate Squad to compete in the fast-paced “Ku- mite”, where points are awarded for speed, accuracy and power of punches and kicks, as well as ‘Kata,’ which highlights speed and accuracy. Samantha Riddell (17), from Sutton Valence, took bronze in the girls 16-17 years individual Kata, while Jack Cutler (14, from Leeds, and the current European Champion for his age
daughter Katie, a former Junior World Champion, powered her way to the final of the ladies’ individual Kata competition, where she won silver. Katie also won a bronze in
the ladies’ individual Kumite as well as leading the England ladies’ team to a bronze in the team Kata event. The fifth member of the

group, reached the finals in both his events and took 4th place in both the boys’ 14-15 years individual Kata and Ku- mite.

MAIDSTONE Borough Council made about £80,000 from fines for littering, dog fouling and fly- tipping in the year 2011-12. Company XFOR Local Au- thority Services took on the contract for patrolling and issu- ing fixed penalty notices in July 2010. In the first year of its con- tract, 2010-11 it made £62,545 for the authority. In answer to a Freedom of In- formation request to the council,
it was revealed that two years be- fore the contract began, in 2008- 9, 16 notices were issued and 10 paid, giving the council an in- come of £750. The following year, 2009-10, 23 noticeswere is- sued and 15 paid, giving the council an income of £1,125. After XFOR Local Authority Services took over the contract in its first year, 2010-11, it is- sued 3,298 fixed penalty notices of which 2,373 were paid,
