A taste of true Italy in Maidstone
Alessandro and Barbara Biscardi have vowed to bring traditional Italian culture to the centre of Maidstone. The 28-year-old has opened
Vesuvius Restaurant in Lower Stone Street with his sister Barbara. The restaurant promotes family values and an Italian heritage that has been lost, he feels.
Alessandro said: “A lot of Italian chains create an image that our restaurants are dimly lit, quiet and romantic. But the culture is very different; we are all about bright colours, noise and making dining a family occasion. This is what we want to promote, without forgetting to leave some quiet corners for romancing couples.”
The less formal ‘trattoria’ style eatery has a rustic appearance, with carpets, lots
of colour and frescos of Naples. The Maidstone restaurant will be the family’s second, after establishing Il Vesuvio in Tunbridge Wells four years ago. As well as offering usual favourites pasta and pizza, Vesuvius serves fresh seafood, a variety of fish, meats and
vegetarian meals. “We sell fresh produce from
Italy, such as cheeses and cured meats, that you would not be able to find in England,” Alessandro said. “Our first restaurant in
Tunbridge Wells was set up as a family partnership with my parents and it has grown. We are very passionate about what we do.”
