2012 is a landmark year for K1 Bri- tannia, a team of individuals who will be restoring the legacy of Prince Albert Ed- ward’s yacht, ‘His Royal Highness’ Yacht Britannia’ from the 1800s, in order to revive a maritime heritage.

The reconstruction process will com- mence with a full stripping of the interior and then a thorough process to refi t the yacht to exact requirements and specifi cations. Britannia will be fully restored to her pris- tine condition at her new home. Her former namesake was privileged to be tagged as the ‘King’s Yacht’ and her re-construction will be similarly worthy of royal approval. She will once again be legendary and rekindle memories of a world where nobility and honour were the norm.

EAST BOOTHBAY -- SCHEHERAZADE skillfully outmaneuvered the fl eet Sunday to take fi rst place honors and winner overall at Shipyard Cup X. With great patience and fl exibility, the race committee, led by PRO Peter Craig, managed to seize the moment in a very foggy Maine day to get a good start after repeated fog and light air brought on postponements. True to the spirit of the event, the “winner overall trophy” was an engraved bucket and large bottle of Dom Pérignon. The bucket was fi lled with champagne and passed around to the winning crew. SCHE- HERAZADE’s owner drew great cheers from the crowd as he took his turn. In Sunday’s event, SCHEHERAZADE was followed by RAPTURE and WHISPER in the daily results, in which the boats and the race committee were able to take advan- tage of breaks in the fog to complete day 2’s racing. Due to an error in calculating starting times for the pursuit start of Saturday’s race, the results were not used to calculate the overall winner of the Shipyard Cup. The fi nal order of fi nishing for Sun-

day’s race and the overall results was: SCHEHERAZADE (154’), RAPTURE (100’), WHISPER (67’). VIRAGO (99’), TENACIOUS (115’), SUMURUN (94’) and WHEN AND IF (64’).

Both builder and designer made a fi ne job of the Prince’s new yacht. It was said of Britannia that a better balanced and better built vessel never crossed the starting line. Yachting writers referred to her shape as the Britannia ideal. She was a handsome ves- sel; Henderson’s built her light and strong, a perfect race yacht. Yachting journalist, James Michael, once wrote; “so proud over the building of her were the men that the putting of her together was a real labour of love. It was not diffi cult to imagine that the framework was woven together so beauti- fully were the many parts joined into and

Made of silver spruce, it was the largest mast ever made as one spar for a yacht, weighing over 3 tonnes. During her racing career which spanned over 40 years, in 635 races she won 231 fi rsts and of a total of 350 prizes. By the end of her fi rst year racing, Britannia had scored 33 wins from 43 starts. In her second season she won all 7 races for the big class yachts on the French Riviera and then beat 1893 America’s Cup defender Vigilant in home waters.

In January 1936 the British people mourned as King George V passed away. It was announced that in accordance with the late King’s wishes upon his death that Britannia would be stripped of her spars and fi ttings and scuttled. So on the 10th
