announced a new conceptual design from their in-house design offi ce. SOPHIA, a 70-foot, cold-molded sloop evokes the beauty and power of classic Sparkman & Stephens Class-A yawls such as BOLERO, BARUNA, BLACK WATCH, AVANTI, WINDIGO and PTARMIGAN. Rockport Marine Yacht Design had a
fi rsthand look at BOLERO, one of the most famous S&S designs of this type, when her owner commissioned the yard to complete- ly restore the vessel. Chamberlin not only worked closely with the S&S design offi ce and project manager John England, but also worked hands-on as a carpenter during the
project.
SOPHIA nods to the traditional lines of BOLERO, but her underbody is a modern keel with centerboard and a spade rudder. All of the characteristics of SOPHIA were chosen with performance, functionality and manageability in mind; this is a boat that will be as comfortable on a racecourse as she will be plugging across the Atlantic on an around-the-world cruise, or anchored off a remote Maine island. Her design calls for robust, cold-molded construction with a carbon fi ber mast and high-performance Dacron sails. The deck is composite con- struction with a teak overlay. The interior is fi t with elegant, “Herreshoff-style” raised panels, and features two staterooms, a
Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in the winter of 1903/1904. They were ordered by R. W. Emmons for the Beverly Yacht Club of Marion, MA, and became known as the Beverly K Class. Essentially an enlarged version of the 15 foot waterline E Class (24’ 6” overall), they measured 29 feet on deck, with an 8 foot 1 inch beam and a 3 foot draft with the centerboard up. Displacement is recorded as 4430 lbs -- 1950 lbs being out- side fi xed ballast -- and they spread 470 sq. ft. of sail.
None of the original fi ve boats remain.
Herreshoff’s original builder’s model, from which the hull shape was measured, is locat- ed at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bris- tol, RI. The plans are at the MIT Museum’s Hart Nautical Collection in Cambridge. Artisan Boatworks have previously built four of Herreshoff’s more popular Buzzards Bay 15s. At the Wooden Boat Show in Mystic,

build a Herreshoff designed Fish Class sim- ilar to Tulip, which Artisan had launched in May, 2011. However, when the new custom- er visited Artisan Boatworks he was struck by a Kathy Bray rendering on the wall, of the Buzzards Bay 18. A conversation ensued which lead to a revised contract -- six months later construction began. Construction of the Artisan Boatworks-
Buzzards Bay 18 replica is edge-glued, cedar planking over steam-bent oak frames and a laminated mahogany backbone. She will be equipped with a Beta 14 hp inboard diesel engine, which will be completely hidden from view within the cabin. GMT Composites of Rhode Island designed and is building the carbon fi ber mast which will be faux painted with wood grain to simulate Sitka spruce, of which the booms and gaff are constructed. The carbon mast will allow the new BB-18 to be sailed without running backstays and increase the stability. The performance will be further im- proved by a full keel, designed by Mark Fitz- gerald of Fitzgerald Marine Architecture in Camden. Brainerd states, “We began by looking at the performance enhancements that Herreshoff achieved several years later in 1907, when he designed a full keel for the smaller Buzzards Bay 15. When we ap- proached Mark Fitzgerald, we asked him to design a keel with a traditional profi le such as Herreshoff would have drawn in 1904, but incorporating a modern foil section.” The new Buzzards Bay 18, UNCAS (named after the last sachem of the Mohegan tribe,) will have sail number K-6 as a tribute to her Beverly Yacht Club lineage. She was launched on August 2nd
and made her public
debut at the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta on August 4th Boothbay.
