Page 18. MAINE COASTAL NEWS September 2012 The 2012 Maine Retired Skipper's Race

Annual Maine Retired Skipper’s Race on the waterfront at Maine Maritime Academy at Castine on 18 August. The weather forecast was for a nice day, but little wind. In the end that was true and it forced the race committee to shorten the course, which created a great battle for the top spot. During skipper’s meeting an emer- gency call came into MMA’s waterfront about a person in the water off Fort Point. Apparently a person was fi shing in a small boat when he fell into the water. Fortunately, a kayaker was in the area and was able to get a PFD on the man. The man was then placed on the kayak until a boat from the Academy reached them and got the man on board. They then took him to shore where emergency responders were standing by. He was hypothermic, but it was expected that

he would be fi ne.

At noon the race committee headed out to the starting line. The wind was light and seemed to be building, but the big question was which course should be use. The light wind was coming out of the northwest, which was forecasted to change to south- west. To make sure that we had a reaching start course B – out to Islesboro Ledge half way down the Islesboro shore, up to Turtle Head, back to the CH buoy off the entrance to Castine Harbor, back to Turtle Head and return to the fi nish at the CH buoy, was chosen.

The starting sequence began at 1250 and this being a pursuit race, the handicap was computed into the starting times. The fi rst boat to start was JADED LADY, skip- pered by Bill Holt. As more boats started down the course the wind went lighter. The

last boat over was PAYAH KUHN skippered by Adm. Ted Rogers at 1349. Everyone made it over the line, with the exception of two boats that did not start, but when PAYAH KUHN was about half way down the fi rst leg the wind died completely. Fortunately, for those that had not rounded the mark the tide was going and this pushed them down to the mark. Those that had rounded the mark and had started up the Islesboro shore began going backwards and were forced to anchor. The race committee kept watching the waters and hoping that the wind would reappear. After two hours of hoping the con- versation turned to shortening the course. The committee boat headed from the CH buoy to the mark off Turtle Head to see if there was any wind there. All they found was fl at water. About an hour later a light breeze could be seen on the water approaching from the west. There was also a report that the racers were getting a light breeze from the southeast. The race committee fi gured that there was no way that the race would be com- pleted if they remained at the second mark off Turtle Head. They made the decision to shorten the course and headed up the second leg and about half way in between the fi rst

and second marks they dropped two buoys. They then informed the racers that the race had been shortened to that point. The racers were spread out about a mile away and they were all moving in the right direction. The wind continued, but remained light. A real battle ensued between WINDSPRITE, skippered by Frank Pedersen, and PAYAH KUHN as to who would be the fi rst to fi nish. PAYAH KUHN was behind, but continued to gain, and as they neared the line there was just a few feet between their bows. Howev- er, there was not enough time for PAYAH KUHN to get by for the win, which went to WINDSPRITE.

There was some other close battles, but the closest was between APOGEE, skip- pered by Bill Pickford, and RAZMATAZ, Carlos Black, which fi nished in a tie. All boats remaining on the course were

fi nished just before 1800 hours. Of the 26 boats that started only six boats opted not to complete the race.

As the race committee compiled the

results and fi gured out the awards, the racers were enjoying a cocktail party which was followed by dinner and the awards.
