Active Shooter: Readiness, Response and Recovery Online Course Course Review: by Rose L. Murillo, M.A., PHR

I found this program to be effective and informative. I especially felt that the Subject Matter Experts utilized in the program provided credibility to the content. Detailed information was given, which included presentations about high-profile incidents, providing in-depth information and sharing how law enforcement and first-responders learned from them.

The online format allowed for a self-paced approach and timing. The use of differing types of formats, including videos, presenta- tions, mini- lectures and moderated conversations provided a balance in maintaining interest while providing both technical and overview information. The verbal presentations seemed natural and professional rather than slick and polished, but there were perhaps more verbal ‘stumbles’ than was necessary.

The down-side to providing so much information is the length of the program. The sessions, in their entirety, were very long, so the appropriate amount of time will need to be set aside and dedicated to completing the training. Due to the amount of content provided, however, it would certainly seem a great value for the price -- a return on the investment spent could pay off in dividends, including potentially saving a life.

The City of Houston’s new public service announcement video describes three strategies to use in response to a workplace or public shooting: run, hide, fight. “If you are ever to find yourself in the middle of an active shooter event, your survival may depend on whether or not you have a plan,” the video explained. When an active shooter is in your vicinity, run and try to evacuate, even if others agree with you or not. If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide and barricade the door. It is important to silence your cell phone and remain very quiet. As a last resort, if your life is in danger, fight back. Finally, when law enforcement arrives, the video advises viewers to remain calm and follow directions; keep your hands visible at all times; avoid pointing or yelling; and know that help for the injured is on the way. “The first responders on the scene are not there to evacuate or tend the injured. They are well trained and are there to stop the shooter,” the video explained.
