INTERNATIONAL NEWS continued Is HR A Dangerous Profession In India?
Following the strike at our plant, I was assaulted inside the Labour Court building in Mumbai in May 1986. Fortunately, it was only a hard blow without any weapon, but resulted in two days of hospitalization. My assailants were not our employees. They were hired from a certain politically motivated group. There are other similar occurrences that have occurred at other plants where labor disputes have arisen.
In my opinion, the current incidence of violence at Maruti Suzuki is most likely attributed to external agents rather than to a spontaneous reaction of the workmen.
It is widely believed that when it was negotiating with workers in the previous strike, the local management had to constantly take instructions from their HQ in Japan and was perceived by workmen as a powerless entity and a puppet in the hands of HQ. The statements by the Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki showed that the organization believed in ‘controlling’ workmen and their unions, thereby enraging their adversaries, making local management nothing more than “sitting ducks in the crossfire.” In this process, HR becomes an easy target for collective anger. The incident at Maruti Suzuki has shown how quickly HR can be perceived to be a villain, when employee relations are mismanaged. Does that make HR a dangerous profession?

This Standard developed by ASIS International and the Society for Human Resource Management provides an overview of policies, processes, and protocols that organizations can adopt to help identify and prevent threatening behavior and violence affecting the workplace, and to better address and resolve threats and violence that have actually occurred. This Standard describes the personnel within organizations who typically become involved in prevention and intervention efforts; outlines a proactive organiza- tional approach to workplace violence focused on prevention and early intervention; and proposes ways in which an organization can better detect, investigate, manage, and - whenever possible - resolve behavior that has generated concerns for workplace safety from violence. The Standard also describes the implementation of a Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention Program, and protocols for effective incident management and resolution..
