‘Wish list’ to shape the future of village
RESIDENTS are to be consulted about the future of Bearsted and their ideas combined with the parish plan to draw up a blue- print of community projects. A second public meeting is to
be held to discuss residents' views which will be put into a “wish list” from which the parish council will select a se- ries of feasible projects.
The Villager
No parking please PARENTS who park illegally on the zig-zag lines outside schools at Madginford and Roseacre Lane could soon find themselves facing fines. Residents say they have been abused by drivers who park across their drives and Maid- stone Council’s parking serv- ices have been asked to act from the start of next term.
Road closure CARING Lane is to be closed for two weeks from September 10. Diversions will be in place via Caring Road and Otham Lane.
Suggestions so far have in- cluded running events in con- junction with the Bearsted and Thurnham Society, inviting a speaker to the annual parish meeting to encourage attendance, a new community centre, a cricket pavilion to include toilets on The Green, and development of the former coalyard at Bearsted station for community use.
Bearsted remains united
THE parish council has voted unanimously against a suggestion it should divide itself between Thurn- ham and Downswood. Former chairman Paul Young put forward the idea
prior to his resignation, suggesting itwould give res- idents to the east of the village a stronger voice when opposing developments such as KIG and pro- posals for Junction 8. Cllr Michael Stark, who is a member of both Bearsted and Thurnham councils, said a merger would make a “cumbersome” council and, while possible in theory, itwould be very difficult in prac- tice.
Whilst Thurnham was predominantly rural, Bearsted was now urban and practically an easterly extension ofMaidstone, members heard. Cllr Denis Spooner said: “It could open up a whole can of worms if you start to tinkerwith parish boundaries.” Cllr Bernard Carine said: “Bearsted Council has many problems, and we do not need any more.”

Cllr Geoff Licence, who is spearheading the council’s Long Term Plan, said: “The idea is to draw up a wish list and they see whatwecan realisticallypursue.” Cllr Geoff Licence said: “In
what is a difficult time for the council, this is something which will engage usmore with the community and help give us more credibility.”
Station to get lift installed A LIFT is to be installed at Bearsted Railway
Station to help the elderly, disabled and people with prams cross the line. Network Rail said there was insufficient evi-
dence of demand for the lift, but following pres- sure from residents and a petition, they have announced work will start later this year. The chairman of the parish councilCllrRichard
Ash is to meet with a representative from Net- work Rail and Maidstone’s conservation officer Mike Parkinson to discuss the project.
Lights out VANDALS who damage the lights on Church Landway will be reported to the police. The lights, installed last year, cost more than £20,000 and at least 10 of the 23 have been smashed. The lights were disconnected at the request of
parish council chairman, Cllr Richard Ash, to avoid any accidents.
