New homes ‘would pay off community centre’
A PLAN for 12 new homes in Lenham would reduce the bur- den on the taxpayer. Developer Rogate has un- veiled a scheme for three free market four-bedroom detached homes on Old Ashford Road, and nine further homes for over 55s behind the medical centre in GroomWay. If the plan is approved, the developer would need to buy 33% of the land from the parish council, which would use the money to pay off the remainder of the loan on the community centre in GroomWay. Loans totalling £300,000 were
taken out to fund the commu- nity centre, which opened in 2004. There are 17 remaining on this bill, which makes up £20,000 of the council’s annual £57,000 precept. Parish council chairman Cllr
Nigel Godfrey said: “We have backed this scheme to get this big debt off parishioners’ backs as the parish council does not have the savings to pay for the community centre. When the centre was built, the ethos was that we were going to sell off some land to pay for it.” The Canterbury-based devel-
oper unveiled the scheme in front of about 40 residents at a public meeting. A common concern among those in atten- dancewas that the proposal did not make any provision for af- fordable housing. Villager David Alexander said:
“Young people need to be part of the overall plan for the area.” The council said it was in ne- gotiations with Town & Country Housing Group regarding build- ing up to four local needs houses close to the 10-home affordable development in GroomWay. Thedeveloper argued thatmak-
ing the majority of the develop- ment for older people would reduce the numbers of vehicles using it. Sixteen spaces have been provided for nine homes. But borough Cllr Tom Sams
said: “There is a situation with people having difficulty access- ing the doctors’ surgery and community centre and I have not heard anything to make me think it will be resolved.” Rogate hoped to apply for plan-
ning permission by autumn. Lenham Parish Council wants to hear local views on the development. Call clerk Margo McFarlane on 01622 859682.
