ICS works through established and respected UK volunteering organisations to send volunteers overseas and to support them while they are there. VSO, the lead agency among this group has a long history of working with young people in developing countries to implement poverty-reduction programmes.
The other agencies are: Restless Development, International Service, Progressio, Raleigh International and Tearfund. ICS also works in partnership with Catch 22, and Islamic Relief to recruit and support volunteers in the UK and with the International Federation of the Red Cross to support young people in developing countries to continue their fight against poverty beyond the ICS programme itself. The scheme is also closely linked with the National Citizen Service which last year saw over 8000 young people using their summer holidays to work together to create social action projects in their local communities. This will rise up to 30,00016 year-olds this year with many of the projects carrying on well beyond the end of the NCS programme.
Peter Bridges, Caernarfon, Wales (picture below)
Peter is just one of many volunteers who show how taking part in ICS has transformed their lives through building skills and providing access to new opportunities. Peter did not have a fixed idea of what he wanted to do and was working in a local sports centre when he joined ICS. Unemployment has doubled in the Gwynedd area, according to recent statistics (November 2011) and many young people have an uncertain future.
After
teaching n a Cerebral Palsy Unit and teaching older students in a Kenyan school, Peter decided it was his calling to be a teacher and, although he arrived back in the UK 2 weeks after the application closing date, the PGCE course leaders were very impressed with his passion and experience on ICS. Peter says :
‘’Being a part of the VSO/ ICS has opened so many doors for me. I have recently passed my PGCE in primary education at Bangor University and I only got to enrol on the course as I had gained experience while on the programme. I am currently looking for a job as a primary teacher in the North Wales area and hope to gain a position soon. “
