A Torfaen teaching assistant has won a national award. Yasmin Gedney, who works at Blaenavon

Heritage VC Primary, was recently presented with the Teaching Assistant of the Year in Wales Award. Nominated by parent Nicki Matthews, Yasmin was presented with the award by the leader of Torfaen council, councillor Bob Wellington, who praised her hard work and commitment.

School serves up a treat Staff and pupils at Padre Pio RC Primary have had a wonderful school year.

Not only did the school win local awards, but its catering team won a national award, after it was named Welsh primary school catering team of the year by the Local Authority Catering Association. The award is given to primary school-based catering teams that have made an outstanding contribution to devising and implementing ways to improve the school’s food service. The team was judged on the service it provides, from holding food tastings to devising its own meals. It was up for the national UK award, which was announced after Torfaen Talks went to press.

Meanwhile, at the annual Pontypool Community Council inter- school Eisteddfod, the school took home both the infant and junior titles. Held at Pontypool Active Living Centre, the organisers complimented the behaviour of all the pupils who attended.

Finally, the school has been flying the flag for greener living, after it passed phase four of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme. It has already got its sights on completing the fifth and penultimate phase.

Headteacher Paul Welsh said: “It has been a great year for

everyone - from our canteen staff being recognised for the excellent work they do on a daily basis, to our brilliant double at the Eisteddfod. Securing the healthy schools scheme award and continuing to fly the flag for sustainable living in Torfaen was the icing on the cake.”

The executive member for children and young people, councillor Mary Barnett, was among the dignitaries at the event. She said: “This award is richly deserved and I would like to congratulate Yasmin on this wonderful achievement. Torfaen is lucky to have a great number of outstanding teachers and teaching assistants who work so hard to give our children the best possible education.”
