New food waste collections are on their way
Weekly food waste collections will be rolled out to all residents in the autumn. Residents will receive a new brown 23-litre
kerbside caddy in September in which to put all their food waste. Collections will commence later in the year, and further details will be sent to every resident with the delivery of the caddy.
Look out for details on
future waste events and roadshows where Dan will be available to answer all your questions on the new food collections. Remember, if Dan Can you can!

• Planning is everything. Think ahead to what the week has in store - look in the fridge, freezer and cupboard, make a simple list so you only buy what you need and make the most of what you have.
• Make the most of your fruit and veg. Apples last even longer when you keep them in the fridge – up to two weeks longer if loosely wrapped. If they’ve had a
knock, put them in a crumble, a sauce or start the day with a smoothie.
• Did you know food can be frozen any time before the ‘use by’ date on the label? When you want to use it, take it out of the freezer, defrost and use within 24 hours.
• Why not sprinkle your potato peelings with salt, pepper, chilli or whatever flavour takes your fancy and pop them in the oven. Free crisps the kids will love!
Changes to increase recycling
A number of improvements have been made at Torfaen’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). The changes mean it is now easier to recycle a variety of different
items, with 58 per cent of the waste that enters the site now being recycled.
Residents are asked to separate their items ready to stop at the
recycling bays in the following order – electrical, metal, cardboard, plasterboard, batteries, textiles, wood, green waste, paint, cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and paper.
Non-recyclable items may be deposited before exiting the site. Members of staff are on hand to assist residents when they visit HWRC.
