///NEWS New ship and crane liſt canal traffic

Peel Ports has added a new 160teu coaster vessel

for its

Liverpool-Manchester barge service and introduced a new 40-tonne harbour mobile crane at its Irlam Container Terminal. The Monica will be deployed

on the existing thrice weekly service between Liverpool and Irlam, on the outskirts of Manchester and will enable the service to call more regularly at Ellesmere Port, which was added as a new destination for the service earlier this year. The new Liebherr crane,

complete with two spreader frames, arrived from Austria and was constructed at Irlam. The service has grown from

handling 3,000 containers in 2009 to an expected 15,000 this year. Head of business

development for Peel Ports Mersey, Stephen “The spectacular

Carr, said: growth in

demand for the barge service over the last two years has enabled us to invest in this next level of capability. “Whilst the existing barge

has served us well, the capability and flexibility offered by the new vessel and crane will enable us to better meet growing demand. Over the last year, we have already invested in upgrading the terminal to ISPS security standards and the terminal operating system is linked to Liverpool via the MCP Destin8 community system, allowing containers to be routed directly to Manchester.” The first phase of the latest £4.3m investment in

the refurbishment of the

Port of Liverpool’s lock system is meanwhile nearing completion. The port of Liverpool said that despite the temporary Gladstone Lock closure, over 90% of vessels have been able to access berths via the Port’s Langton Lock during the outage. The work has seen the giant West Inner Gate - 16m in height and weighing 400 tonnes - removed following the fixing in place of a limpet dam at the mouth of the lock. The refurbished gate is now being manoeuvred into place and the dam removed. The work will provide a

more reliable lock system and reduce maintenance costs. Gladstone Lock’s East Inner

Gate will be replaced in an identical operation in August.

our customers, the resulting cost reductions will be significant.” He added: “The value in London

when London gateway opens.” The Finishing Line currently handles mainly fulfilment operations for magazine publishers but

its

175-strong workforce in Basildon can configure any types of goods. Andy Mead added:

“At the

moment, product oſten goes in Felixstowe and then goes to the Midlands for devanning and warehousing – and then goes back to another distribution centre in that area. And then 30-40% of it comes back down to London and the South East for final distribution – so London Gateway really is a no- brainer.” He said that the logistics and forwarding community were now becoming aware of the possibilities that London Gateway could offer. Mead continued “Reducing

supply chain costs and improving reliability for our customers

at the core of our business. We firmly believe cargo owners will experience significant cost reductions as well as reduce their CO2 levels by using London Gateway. We handle some 70million magazines every year and our calculations show that by choosing London Gateway, we will reduce inland road transport by over 500,000 miles every year for

Gateway is huge for companies based in and around London and the Southeast, it also offers significant savings for those in the Midlands and further afield. We are one of hundreds of UK SMEs who will see cost reductions. For the first time we are able to plan long term and with confidence.” A

spokesman for London

Gateway added that there were hundreds of other customers who were “ready to stand up and be counted” and who would choose shipping lines calling at London Gateway. “Forwarders too realise that they can gain considerable supply chain savings, which is in their interest to pass on to their customers.” The port’s commercial director,

Charles Meaby stated: “We welcome The Finishing Line’s support and we are working with Andy Mead to ensure his customers reduce costs. London Gateway provides a unique opportunity to save UK businesses hundreds of millions of pounds every year as we are closer to the key UK markets.” And at local forwarder Claridon

Logistics, managing director Chris Scott said: “We will be promoting the port in a big way and will

be routing 90% of our business through London Gateway. It’s absolutely paramount to our business.” Claridon can probably claim to

be the new port’s nearest forwarder, having moved to the area when it purchased the freehold of an office building at Stanford-le-Hope 12 years ago. “For all our clients in the South- East, the port will offer fantastic cost and carbon savings,” Scott added. He added: “We have been

waiting for this development for 12 years. It’s phenomenal what has been achieved and the port’s management are really switched on.” At the recent Multimodal show in Birmingham, global logistics operator

Uniserve revealed

details of a 50-acre site with 40-metre high bay warehouses, a 1m sq ſt warehouse with a rail terminal and a fully automated with a sophisticate pick and pack facility and space for 140,000 pallets. London

Gateway has

appointed Jones Lang LaSalle as sole property agents for its logistics park development, for the new 3.5m teu deep-sea container port, located just east of London on the north bank of the Thames. It was also due to reveal details of a rail operator on 2 July.
