6 Peter Salmon Director, BBC North

The BBC is a year into its move to Salford and so far things appear relatively problem-free. Much of that seamless transition is down to Peter Salmon, who has overseen the largest-scale trans- fer of staff in the BBC’s history. Things might have been a bit hairy for a while when Salmon was called to task over his refusal to move to Manchester, but the former BBC controller has suc- cessfully ridden through the storm. Salford is now the BBC’s second biggest production centre, home to Children’s, Sport and Radio 5 Live, as well as high- profile shows such as Dragons’ Den. All eyes will be on Salmon to ensure the strong foundations he has laid are something that can genuinely be built on.

Panorama: Undercover Care, Frozen Planet and the Royal Wedding. The latter, along with another multiple award-winner, BBC3’s Our War, also helped their channels reach their highest-ever AIs. In-house also won an unparalleled five out 12 British Comedy Awards thanks to the likes of Miranda and Twenty Twelve. The next challenge is to win more commissions and, with a recent in-house restructure that sees Younge focus more on the creative side of the business, that looks more likely than ever.

London 2012: career high for Roger Mosey

TV production. The breadth of areas Pact covers under McVay demonstrates a deep understand- ing of the industry and the ability to tackle any issue head on.

7 Pat Younge

Chief creative officer, BBC Vision Productions

Overseeing some of the BBC’s most treasured brands, such as Strictly and Top Gear, and mana- ging around 3,000 staff across the UK, the role of chief creative officer of Vision Productions is not for the faint-hearted. When Pat Younge was first parachuted in, morale was at an all-time low, but despite continued BBC belt- tightening, he has won his team around – and awards have proved plentiful. Among the winners were

Having headed Radio 5 Live, BBC TV News and BBC Sport, Mosey’s BBC career has arguably been building to this: overseeing a summer schedule in which the corporation shouts about Britain from the rooftops. For him, 2012 is Jubilee pageantry, Shakespeare and very soon the Olympics – from Greco-Roman wrestling to the 100m final. He’s handled the Games before, but never this close to home, nor with so much riding on the BBC to prove its role in uniting the nation. The BBC will show every filmed event, however obscure, and it’s Mosey’s job to ensure viewers don’t get lost between BBC1 and Olympic Channel number 24. Whatever the outcome, how will he top this?

9 John McVay Chief executive, Pact

The past year has been hectic for John McVay, with terms of trade negotiations taking place with all broadcasters and Pact throwing its net out to new international territories such as Japan and Brazil. McVay has been at the helm of the major initiatives, always ready to argue the case for indies across the board. Not only has Pact managed to update its terms with Channel 4, negotiating a new model of click-per-view payments for online viewing, but it has also been involved in securing tax breaks for high-end

Animation UK: successful campaign for Oli Hyatt

Just 18 months ago, Oli Hyatt’s name would have meant little to people outside of the animation industry, but today he is widely credited with saving the sector. Hyatt’s tireless campaigning on behalf of Animation UK, the lobby group he helped to set up, resulted in the government’s offer of financial support that will keep the likes of Wallace And Gromit, Peppa Pig and Rastamouse in Britain. After starting with nothing more than a desperate hope for change, Hyatt achieved what professional lobbyists dream of. With backing from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, he secured a meeting with chancellor George Osborne, which in time led to a commitment for tax breaks in this year’s Budget.
