Hot 100 2012 LEADER The thrill of the new 04 06

ROBIN PARKER SUPPLEMENT EDITOR

Given the incestuous nature of British TV, you’d be forgiven for expecting Broadcast’s Hot 100 to shuffle many of the names from our last industry snapshot, back in January 2010, into a new order. It’s testa- ment to the vitality of this medium that just 20 of that list have reappeared, some making bigger strides in their jobs and others now exerting influ- ence elsewhere. Nowhere is the thrill of the new more evident than in our Talent category, where a small digital

channel has sent a new star into supernova thanks to a pitch-perfect commission, canny marketing and a determination to fight off other suitors to keep him – and let him do it his way. And the toughest category, the Industry Leaders, which had the Broad-

cast team tearing their hair out over which bigwig we could possibly not include, still finds room for one surprise entry; one that reveals that actual, measurable change need not necessarily come from the most connected person in the room, but the most impassioned. It’s a list that’s definitely of the moment, one in which we’re still await-

ing an announcement of a new BBC director general, and holding off our verdict on YouView until we can actually use it. Certain factors can’t be ignored: the escalating commissioning sway of Sky; the undeniable resurgence of appointment-to-view blockbuster drama; the cinematic vision of our best directors and colourists; and the shifting sands of the digital world (where just two years ago, a UK version of Hulu.com was a sufficiently game-changing proposition to make the list). As far as the perennial issue of diversity is concerned, there is some

improvement in the gender split, rising from 21 females featured in 2010 to 28 this year. But little progress has been made on ethnic diversity at a senior level in the industry, which remains an area desperate for change. However, above all, this year’s Hot 100 can stand shoulder to shoulder

with previous years’ candidates as the most exciting talents keeping a rapidly-evolving industry alive in challenging times.
