History of the Pony Group


The South West Shetland Pony Group was founded in 1991 by a group of Shetland breeders with the aim of bringing together owners, breeders, and people who just love the breed and maybe don’t even own a pony.


The Pony Group membership covers Cornwall, Devon and Somerset with a variety of types of membership available - family, individual and junior for the younger children.


Most members enjoy showing their ponies in-hand at local /


regional or even national level and if they have a small enough jockey, ridden classes.


Driving has become even more popular over the last few years and some shows run driven classes for Shetlands or mixed mountain and moorland driven classes.


Shetlands are tough little ponies, being bred in Scotland they can live out all year round.


Their height ranges up to 34 inches for the miniatures and from 34 inches up to 42 inches for the standard Shetland ponies.
