and you understand that the Holly- wood studios draw on a global talent pool to make their biggest movies. In this case, Sweden, Ireland and the UK, not to mention the fi lm was shot in the UK and also starred Idris Elba, Rafe Spall, Guy Pearce, Sean Harris and Kate Dickie. Representing Hol- lywood proper, Charlize Theron was positively outnumbered — and even she’s originally from South Africa. But then again, as we should

remind ourselves more often, Holly- wood has always trawled the world for talent and ideas. Too often the European fi lm community sees Hol- lywood and the global distribution monopoly it represents as the enemy rather than a means to promote local talent and stories. Rapace and Fass- bender will continue to make fi lms in their own countries — they are both fi ercely intelligent actors who want to tell daring stories as Beyond and Shame demonstrate amply — and the fact they are becoming bona-fi de movie stars via Hollywood will only help them to get risk-taking films made in the future. I bring this up because in this issue Screen presents its annual Stars of Tomorrow feature, a parade of actors and fi lm-makers who could one day go the way of Scott, Rapace and Fass- bender. This highly curated feature, which celebrates its ninth edition this year focuses on new talent in the UK, arguably the territory that feeds the most into the Hollywood system. Many young actors featured in Stars of Tomorrow have enjoyedjoyed huge success in the US, and this summer alone former Stars in the mix include Andrew Garfi eld (The Amaz- ing Spider-Man), Aaron John- son (Savages) and Dominic

Cooper (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), with Robert Pattinson (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2), Luke Evans (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Eddie Red- mayne (Les Misérables) and Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby) set for fi lms at the end of the year. These successes in Hollywood
only benefi t the UK industry where their stars were hatched, and all of these actors work fluidly between Europe and Los Angeles. It’s fasci- nating to see Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas return to Spain to appear together in Pedro Almodo- var’s latest The Brief Lovers, signal- ling a continued loyalty to their native land and to the director who gave them their breakthrough parts. It’s not just actors who benefit
from a back and forth with Holly- wood. This year, Timur Bekmambe- tov, John Hillcoat, Andrew Dominik, Ole Bornedal, Pete Travis, Olivier Megaton, Sam Mendes, Roger Michell, Ang Lee, Peter Jackson, Tom Hooper, Baz Luhrmann and others are behind US movies that will open across the world. Screen celebrates stars and direc-
tors who travel between cultures in the same way stories travel for remakes in different languages. For our Stars of Tomorrow class of 2012, it’s a case of have talent, will travel.
» This is my last issue as editor of Screen. I have been at the paper since 1994 and seen numerous changes in both the fi lm and publishing fi elds, on both sides of the Atlantic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the brilliant journalists, advertis- ing and publishing executives I have worked with over the years, and my friends in the industry. Sad as I feel to leave the brand, I am reassured by the fact I am leaving Screen in the very capable hands of Wendy Mitchell.

Wendy Mitchell has been appointed as the new editor of Screen International and
ScreenDaily.com. Mitchell joined Screen in 2005 as UK reporter, rising to news editor, senior editor, head of news and most recently head of content. Mitchell has been a journalist for 16 years and will succeed Screen’s current editor Mike Goodridge, who joins Protagonist Pictures as CEO in August.
