20 30th June 2012 auction previews

1. Just after completing his run as an Olympic Torchbearer in 1948, Gerry Cranham rescued this poster from a lamp-post. A member of Reading and District Athletics Club at the time, Mr Cranham went on to become a well- known horseracing photographer. The original 2ft 6in x 20in (76 x 51cm) poster by Walter Herz (b.1909), consigned by Mr Cranham’s son, is estimated at £1000-1500 in Onslows’ internet auction of vintage posters on June 29. The photograph also shown is of Gerry Cranham during that 1948 relay and is thought to be in Windsor Great Park. Contact 01258 488838 www.onslows.co.uk

2. A highlight at Fieldings Auctioneers’ July 7 sale in Stourbridge is a box containing personal effects reputed to have belonged to Captain William Kidd, the well-known Scottish sailor who was convicted of piracy and hanged in London on May 23, 1701. The vendor had bought the lot along with a number of other pirate items from an auction at Oakden & Co of Eastbourne in 1950, where they had formerly been in the collection of the late Hubert Palmer, a lawyer and collector of pirate relics. The £800-1200 estimated lot contains an 18th-century carved oak bible box, a leather-bound King James II bible and a small oak-framed mirror, each with the initials WK next to a skull and crossbones. 3. Hot on the heels of Bloomsbury’s Post War British Art and Modern prints sales is Urban Contemporary, a 120-lot auction held on July 3 at the auction house’s rooms in Mayfair, London. Among the star attractions here is Moona Lisa, a unique rendition in gold by Bristol-based artist Nick Walker. From a UK private collection, the 3ft 3¼in x 2ft 3½in (1m x 70cm) piece is estimated at £6000-8000.
