Walt McKay’s first car was a 1948 MG TC fit- ted with a Ford flathead V860 motor. His first competitive experience came in 1954 in hill climbs at Hockley Valley and Rattlesnake Point. Te MG TC’s were followed by a ‘53 XK120 Jaguar coupe and a Bugeye Sprite. Walt then bought a Lotus 18 Formula Junior and drove in the first event ever held at Mosport in June of 1961. He was presented with the “Driver of the Year” award in 1961 by the Canadian Racing Drivers Association and was winner of the CRDA Formula Junior Champi- onship in 1961 and 1963. Walt later joined the fa-
mous Comstock team for the 1965 season, driving both the Cooper Ford and one of the Shelby 350 GTs. For the 1966 season Walt drove an Astur Group 7 car, as well as a one-off drive in a Mk 3 McLaren. Walt also raced an MGA, Sunbeam Alpine, Morris Minor and a Lotus Super Seven throughout the late 1960’s. After an accident in 1972, Walt was out of racing until 1980 when he came across an article in the Globe and Mail about “vintage racing”. Walt has been a VARAC mem- ber and racer since.
BiLL BraCK Bill Brack is the only driver to
win three Canadian driving championships in three consecu- tive years: ‘73, ‘74 and ‘75. To do it, he had to beat some of the fu- ture Grand Prix champions, fu- ture Indy 500 winners and a young up-and-comer named Gilles Villeneuve. In his out- standing career, Bill also won a North American Formula At- lantic Championship and the Canadian Touring Car Champi- onship.

gary magwood From winning a Canadian Formula Ford Championship in 1970, Gary launched the second full-
time racing school in North America at Mosport in 1971. In addition to heading up the racing school, Gary raced Formula B and Formula Atlantic cars until the mid 70s. He retired from “active” racing to a farm in Eastern Ontario, but was drawn back into the driving world with the launch of the Labatt Road Scholarship in 1988. For eight years Gary worked with and trained many of Canada’s top racing and rally drivers to teach collision avoid- ance skills to thou- sands of drivers of all ages right across Canada. He is also a co-founder of Te Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame and con- tinues to speak out on driving and traffic is- sues.
