VARAC Car Classes PRE-WAR
VARAC recognises cars in nine individual Vintage, Historic and Group 70+ Classes at its Race Events, based upon the age range and type of the car. These car classes are then joined together in different Race Groups, depending upon speed and weight considerations. For example, Vintage Production Sports Cars and Historic Production Sports cars will race together as they are similar in weight and performance. However, the next generation, G70+ sedans, are simply too heavy, and often too fast to race safely with the older cars, so they never race with Vintage and Historic cars. At our Festival, we also include a further Group, ‘Wings and Slicks” - these are high performance cars that run on “slicks” (i.e. untreaded tires) and have had aerodynamic treatment - wings or aero styled bodies. Cars such as Formula B open wheel cars (often Historic Open Wheel Cars), or Group C and Sports 2000 Sports Racers (Group 70+ cars) make up the bulk of this
class. These cars tend to run different lines to other cars, so they are given their own race so they can play nicely together! Below is a description of our main classes:
These are the most common vintage racing cars and usually the most aff ordable to get on
track. This class consists of cars like Austin Healey Sprites or 3000, Lotus Seven, Triumph TR3/4, MGA, Porsche 356 and other mass-produced “street” cars. Class cut-off : December 31, 1961. Shown: 1962 MGA
VINTAGE SPORTS RACERS
This class includes Pre-War Single-seat and Sports cars plus post-war T-Series MGs. Shown here is a MG TD.
VINTAGE OPEN WHEEL
The “exotics” of the cars with fenders, they were usually limited production racing cars. Elvas, Lotus IX, 17, 19, Lola MkI, Porsche RS-60, Devin or road racing “specials” of the period with documented histories. They are rarer than vintage production cars and usually a lot faster. Class cut-off : December 31, 1961. Shown: 1960 Lola Mk.1A
A class that incorporates cars built to diff erent formulas including the Formula Junior specifi cation. It’s common to see cars such as Cooper, Lotus, Elva, Gemini, and Lola in this class as well as Sadler and Stebro, two rare Canadian built cars. Class cut-off : December 31, 1963. Shown is a 1960 Lotus 18 Formula Junior
VINTAGE PRODUCTION SPORTS CARS
This class follows the FIA defi nition of a sedan: a roof and
room for four- and is dominated by one car - the Mini Cooper S both by numbers and performance, although other cars like Volvos, Lotus Cortinas and Ford Escorts are popular. This is a very exciting and aff ordable VARAC class. Class cut-off : December 31, 1972 Shown: 1969 Morris Cooper S *
