Wyndham Arcade Gallery (WAG) Opening 06/02/09
I received an invitation by text to this event from man-about-town Mr Jah Scouse. This was the latest exhibition by the notorious art collective that is Cardiff City’s wives and girlfriends. Heh. It’s not really, it’s the wives and girlfriends of Glamorgan Cricket Club. Oh dear.
Let’s start again. On display at this new gallery is a diverse range of works by some of Wales’ 56 Group, named after the year it was established. Curiously, not more than 22 artists are permitted to be part of the group. The current exhibition houses 6 of them.
The striking centrepiece is by Martyn Jones, which is a series of bold, almost
brushstrokes which give the impression of a 70’s or 80’s notion of a futuristic skyscape.
There are two delicate pencil studies by Peter Seabourne, as well as a painting of his entitled ‘Rembrandt’s Sweets’.
Sue Hunt’s were possibly my favourites. They are
simple still confidence about lifes, but there them, and
concentration in the composition. Other exhibitors include
is a a good Dilys Jackson,
whose work is of small studies and a slightly peculiar plant-like bronze sculpture, Peter Spriggs,
displaying abstract pieces that feature a Picasso-esque dog (apparently 17 lurid
from a cartoon before my time), and Glyn Jones, whose paintings have the look of print-work. One of them is entitled “Haiku”. I couldn’t immediately see a link between the painting and this form of poetry, although I’m sure Glyn would have been happy to explain this to me.
It was an enjoyable enough evening, and Mr. Scouse took pleasure in introducing me as Mr. Square to various people, including the owners of
the clothes shop below the
gallery, Phil and Sue. The shop is currently selling dresses and other items from just £5.00, so female shoppers in Cardiff could have an enjoyable time visiting both shop and gallery. Sue also runs Anne Summers nights, so speak to her if you have plans to spend an enjoyable “night in”.
