legitimate, imposing such cuts on the most needy and vulnerable members of our community, in my personal opinion, is unconscionable. Yet, we had to respond, and respond we did with staff layoff s, salary freezes, reduced benefits, voluntary retirements, and attrition without replacements. Our reality is that our offi ce fi elds over 17,000 calls for

assistance on an annual basis with only a small percentage (a little over one-third) of requests accepted for representation. T e rest are unfortunately and painfully turned away. With that in mind, the best of times can be even better if our readership will do two, maybe three, things. First, become ambassadors for justice and individually donate to MALS’ Campaign for Equal Justice, chaired by David Harris, Partner, Burch, Porter & Johnson PLLC; second, encourage your fi rm and others within and beyond the legal community to support access to justice through the Campaign; and third, if you are an attorney and/or legal professional please volunteer and encourage your fi rm and others to volunteer in the various pro bono/voluntary opportunities available at MALS. Indeed, these are both the best of times and worst of

times but our system of justice can be most eff ective if and only if a strong and viable Memphis Area Legal Services exists to serve, coordinate and anchor legal assistance to the most needy in our community. Without it, we are perpetuating the worst of times! t
