Ads on toilets approved

MAIDSTONE Council hopes to make as much as £12,000 from allowing commercial adverts to be placed on its property. The borough will allow pri-

vate companies to advertise on boards at 26 different locations, mainly public toilets and car parks, in urban Maidstone. The planning committee ac- cepted separate applications for all locations, but the proposal to place a 1.6m-high poster case at the Penenden Heath toilets was met with concern by local ward

Benefit fraudster sentenced

AWOMAN from Weavering who fraudulently claimed benefit has appeared before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court.

Denise Viegas (40), of The Hedgerow, pleaded guilty to dishonestly failing to declare she was living with her part- ner. As a result, shewas over- paid housing and council tax benefit amounting to £29,693. Viegas was sentenced to

180 days imprisonment, sus- pended for 18 months, and 240 hours unpaid work. The overpayments will be repaid to the council

The decision to allow adverts at Penenden Heath toilets did not please all

members Cllr Jenni Paterson and Tony Harwood. Cllr Harwood said: “While I support the principle of realis-

ing any financial benefit, I feel we may have reached the thin end of the wedge with this site.” He recommended refusal be-

cause he felt the sign would de- tract from the character of the area through the creation of an urbanising element. However, a separate motion to back the ap- plication was backed by seven votes to four to give the go- ahead to the application. Maidstone Council will be al-

lowed to decline any adverts it feels are inappropriate.

GForces car park backed

AN application by IT and web consultancy GForces to create a car park on land next to its premises in Caring Lane, Thurnham, has been met with the approval of the parish coun- cil, provided it is not hard-sur- faced.

Members of the parish coun-

cil who live in Caring Lane ab- stained from the vote, but the rest agreed not to object to the application, provided the sur- face was finished with plastic- reinforced grass matting. The application, which was submitted to Maidstone Bor- ough Council three days before representatives of the com- pany addressed Thurnham

members about the success of its business and plans for the future, is for use of a 0.12 hectare area of land to the south of the Corbin Business Park on the west of Caring Lane. Staff and visitors to the offices already use the site on an infor- mal basis. The company has experi-

enced rapid growth and, ac- cording to the application, despite the its best efforts to en- courage staff to car share and travel to work by other means, there has been a high level of parking on Caring Lane. The car park will provide 44 additional spaces.

Care home plan

against policy MAIDSTONE Council has gone against policy and allowed the conversion of a residential care home into a single dwelling in Chatham Road, Sandling. The retrospective proposal

for the property, called Ruby, was not in accordance with De- velopment Plan policy or cen- tral government guidance. But according to the decision no- tice: “In this specific case, the proposed change of use would not represent an unjustified form of development that would cause unacceptable harm to the character and ap- pearance of the countryside.”

School doing well SENACRE Wood Primary School is performing so well that its next full inspection has been deferred. The 203-pupil school in Graveney Road, Maidstone, has been told that, following an in- terim assessment, it will not re- ceive its next Ofsted visit before the summer of 2013. The school was judged good

by inspectors in November, 2008.

Extension agreed A PLAN has been submitted to erect a single-storey rear exten- sion and 1.8m high wall to part of the boundary at 17, Button Lane, Bearsted.
