24,000 new jobs to be created in Southampton

managing partner at Trethowans solicitors, which has offices at Rockstone Place in Southampton and in Salisbury, said the firm has, over the years, considered out of town locations with associated benefits such as more parking: “The city centre location has worked very well for us. We are very committed to the Southampton business community and being in the city really helps. Hopefully the Master Plan will help spark the development of more office space soon to keep businesses in the city.“

He questioned: “Maybe now there will be a queue of businesses wanting to return to the city?“

BRAIN TUMOURS KILL MORE CHILDREN AND MORE PEOPLE UNDER 40 THAN ANY OTHER CANCER

Every tile on the ‘Wall of Hope’ represents a day of brain tumour research that needs funding at our pioneering research centre at the University of Portsmouth.

International business entrepreneur Theo Paphitis, who backed the City Centre Master Plan when he gave the keynote at Future Southampton, has made regional businesses think twice about the lure of out-of-town locations.

More than 400 delegates, comprising major developers, businesses, contractors and regional businesses from across the UK, attended the conference at St Mary’s Stadium to showcase opportunities in the city.

Southampton City Council is planning more than 24,000 new jobs and £3 billion of new investment in the city during the next 20 years. The Master Plan includes a re-mastered city centre, a new world class waterfront, a fresh approach to transport and sustainable travel, new business district and the adoption of the best architectural practices and much more.

Royston Smith, city council leader, said ’now is the time to invest in Southampton’, before the keynote from Paphitis, Dragons’ Den star and chairman of Boux Avenue lingerie and Ryman Stationery.

The conference proved thought provoking. Simon Rhodes,

Paphitis, who wants to bring Boux Avenue to Southampton but has yet to locate a retail outlet, said: “The Master Plan is all about generating investment, jobs and growth for the city of Southampton, and that’s exactly what it will do. If a city doesn’t have a plan like this, there’s no question in my mind that it will suffer like the proverbial High Street.

“Southampton has so much going for it. It is a vibrant place with a real mix of all sorts of people right across the spectrum. For me as a mass retailer, it is exactly what I am looking for.“

Planning to open 20-30 Boux Avenues, not 200, Paphitis sees the Internet offering as complementary at a time when the affects of online shopping, out of town/supermarket shopping and the state of the high street are highly topical. “Common sense is not that common. The community must invest along with corporations, entrepreneurs, retailers and businesses. It’s important that money is spent sensibly here. I would love to see this particular plan come to fruition.“

Professor Don Nutbeam, vice chancellor at the University of Southampton reminded delegates that there are two thriving universities in the city and that both the University of Southampton and Southampton Solent University are major employers. He added a little known fact – that there is a former University of Southampton graduate in every Formula 1 engineering team: “We need to retain as much talent as possible, create job opportunities and the economy to retain them.“
