not beyond your reach

Current postgraduate student Oliver Anderson is head of workforce and development for the NHS SHIP Cluster, which includes Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth. He chose to do a postgraduate diploma in human resource management because he wanted to broaden his skills and gain another qualification.

Anderson said: “The NHS is currently undergoing a massive change and I strongly believe having a professional qualification makes you more resilient. I had worked for many years in workforce planning at different levels but was keen to learn more about the full spectrum of human resources (HR). The course has really opened my eyes to how all elements of HR link together.

Our part-time Business and Management Degree is designed for busy working people and is available one evening a week from several colleges across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and from the University of Portsmouth.

It is open to those who may not have formal qualifications but whose work experience will have prepared them to succeed.

“I was recommended the course by Rosalyn Jack, director of human resources for the NHS SHIP Cluster, who had previously studied at Portsmouth Business School.

It was also important

for me that the University has a good reputation and is an accredited centre for the

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

and operate a new Centre of Innovation for the Application of High Performance Computing.

Together, the four universities, collaborating with the e-Science Centre at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories (RAL) near Oxford, form the e-Infrastructure South Consortium. The creation of this new Centre of Innovation is the consortium’s first major activity since its launch in 2011.

Oz Parchment, Southampton’s director of research computing,

said: “The vast majority of Southampton’s £2.2m share is being used to upgrade the University’s Iridis3 supercomputer, ranked 74 in the world when it was first switched on in 2009. A 12,000 core Intel Westmere based general architecture/x86 based system is now being installed, giving it twice its original performance. Remaining funding will be used to support and run facilities for a year.“

“Studying is already having an impact on my job and I am constantly taking learning back to the workplace. I’ve formulated a strategy for HR to take into a new commissioning support organisation, ’Commissioning Support South’, which will be emerging soon, and the knowledge I have gained has certainly helped me put this together. I’m really enjoying how I can apply knowledge more strategically now.“

which comprises an intensive four-day teaching block in May and a two-day teaching block in September followed by a dissertation.

He said: “I’m impressed with the Business School. The course is really well put together and the tutors have been fantastic. There’s a good mix of learning styles too which keeps you interested. I’m sure that completing this course will help me move towards director level in future, which is my long-term goal.“

To find out more, the next Portsmouth Business School open evening will be held on Tuesday June 19, and will feature a guest presentation from Will King, founder and CEO of King of Shaves.

City College wins three awards in e-learning

City College Southampton swept the board at an annual regional awards’ ceremony covering e-learning, picking up three accolades at the Hi 5 Awards, held in London.

These recognise excellent use of technology in education and see colleges and universities from across the South East compete. City College had its best result, with two members of staff winning awards and another team named runner up.

City Horizons lecturer Gary Crawford won the ’widening participation’ award for his use of QR codes and Wattpad to support early years’ students. Matthew Whiteway, SLDD lecturer, won the learning support category award. Meanwhile, the college’s ICT support and learner records team was named runner up for the ’technical infrastructure’ award, after judges were impressed by its locally-developed integrated applications’ system.

John Savage, learning technologies’ manager, said: “To win the highest number of awards in our history of entering is testament to our dedication to e-learning. We put a great deal of work into using the latest technologies, so to be recognised for that is fantastic.“

City College has its own student tracking system, eTracker, which students can use online to check their progress on a course and ’Facebook style’ personal portfolio pages which can be used as part of their assessment. The software enables young people to develop their employability skills and gives them the chance to showcase what they can do to potential employers. The college is using the same software to support hundreds of school pupils as part of the Southampton Junior University Project.
