fundraiser, it’s also about awareness and getting the word out. Disposti shares that, “Fundraising is important, because right now we are one of the only LGBT Centers in the U.S. that is run without grant money—we don’t necessarily want to keep it that way! But with the Gala, we hope to accomplish the ability to continue services, growing our awareness in the community and also to raise enough funds to keep doing what we are doing for the next year!” The gala is at the fantastic Oceanside Museum of

This their second annual gala has special signifi-

cance because as Executive Director Max Disposti says, “There is a big change because last year we were still dreaming of opening the center. This year we have an actual address, largely due to the suc- cess of last year’s event—which raised enough to start opening the Center.” He continues, “North County is a large county and

the need for services was long overdue, the day we opened the doors we realized this. There is a great need for care with our youth and individuals who have been through so much, as well as their parents and families. We provide that with support groups, HIV health services, mental health services and all of it is free.” The gala represents all of this, but it is not just a

Art, a beautiful venue with large, open indoor and outdoor spaces. Inside there will be presentations and a silent auction and the outside area will be set up for people to mingle, dance, eat and drink the night away. The theme is “We Are Family” and the event is meant to be a chance for people to get to know and support their North County “family.” John Duvan, Mayor of West Hollywood, will be

the main speaker for the evening. Disposti fills us in, “He is a long-time supporter and fundraiser for the gay community, who has worked hard to promote anti-discrimination legislation for those infected with HIV—someone who has been on the front lines for a long time.” All in all a great event with wonderful entertain-

ment, speakers and much, much more; for tickets and more information call 760.672.1848 or E-mail info@resourcecenter.org The location of the North County LGBTQ Resource

ment to honoring Harvey. The 2011 Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast was attended by more than 1,000 people, businesses, groups and organiza- tions making ours the largest Harvey Milk cel- ebration in the state of California. Delores Jacobs, Executive Director for the Center said of last year’s breakfast, “Fabulous turnout to the Harvey Milk Di- versity Breakfast, more than 1,000 folks! Thank you to sponsors, table captains, presenters, honorees and volunteers—they have made this the best Milk event in the state for three years running!” Here’s hoping 2012 is no exception as we take on the slogan “Remember. Renew. Recommit.” The Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast seeks to

bring together all San Diegans who support equal- ity and justice in celebration of the life and work of Harvey Milk. While enjoying breakfast, guests also learn about and honor the great work being done in our local community. The Center invites you to join 1,000 of your closest friends for the presenta- tion of the 2012 Harvey Milk Leadership Award, Equality Award and Youth Essay Award. Last year’s award winners included San Diego Unified School District Board of Education, Super- intendent Bill Kowba and the Safe Schools Task Force and Cheryl Kilodavis author of the children’s bookMy Princess Boy. A little about Harvey Milk: When he was elected

to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, Harvey Milk (1930-1978) became one of the first openly gay men to be elected to public office in the United States. On election night, Harvey Milk reminded his supporters: “This is not my victory – it’s yours. If a gay man can win, it proves that there is hope for all minorities who are willing to fight.” Milk was assassinated (along with Mayor George Moscone) on November 27, 1978, only eleven months after taking office. Though he did not live to see all of his dreams fulfilled, the example of his life and his leadership has made him an important national symbol for the struggle for human rights and freedom of expression.
